初めてのクリスマス（讃美歌103番）/The First Noel

エルヴィス・プレスリー自身のアダプトによる讃美歌１０３番。厳粛なオルガンで始まるクリスマスキャロルに仕上げています。

牧人ひつじを（まきびとひつじを／The first noel）で知られるクリスマスに歌われるイギリスのキャロル(讃美歌tosite)。

この曲の旋律は、イングランド西部地方に17世紀以前から伝わる旋律。ウィリアム・サンズ（英語版）が1833年に発表して以来、軽快な曲と共に世界に広まった。アメリカでもよく歌われるようになった。

初めてのクリスマス

最初の聖夜に　天使が告げた
野原で休む貧しい羊飼い達に
羊を飼っている野原で
とても寒い冬の夜更けに

聖夜　イスラエルの王が降誕せり

羊飼い達は　空を見上げて星を見た
東に輝く　遠くの星を
それは地上に　強い光を放ち
昼も夜も　輝き続けた

そして同じ星の光で
三人の賢者が遠い国からやって来た
彼らは王に会いに来た
その星が導く場所へ

その星は北西へ近づき
ベツレヘムの上で止まり
そこで留まった
イエスが生まれたその真上で

三人の賢者がやって来て
つつしんで　ひざまずいた
イエスの前で献上したのは
黄金と没薬と乳香

さあ皆でそろって
我らが天なる主を讃えよう
主は無から天と地を創造され

The first Noel the angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep:

They looked up and saw a star,
Shining in the east, beyond them far:
